Technology Behind our Relaxation DVDs: HDV High Definition - Gray Art

Technology Used Wisely

A DVD has the capacity for an elaborate network of menus, multiple subtitles, and several video and audio tracks, and even games. Mmmm...tempting.

In keeping with our purist philosophy, the DVDs we produce have no distracting menu mazes. You will notice that there is the absence of a menu, and in fact, you will not even need to press play. The DVD experience is continuous; when the end of playback is reached, it seamlessly loops to the beginning.

Dolphin-safe. Plasma-safe.

Displaying a single image continuously on an older plasma screen over an extended period of time (for hundreds of hours) can cause burn-in, causing an unsightly ghost image on the screen. The Gray Art DVD experience reduces the risk of burn-in two ways:

  • Most of the visual display is fluid motion, which keeps the screen pixels changing color and brightness.
  • The DVD employs a screen "orbiting" technology where the viewable scene is unnoticeably shifted both vertically and horizontally. Static areas (like rocks and other landscape elements) are slowly moved over the course of an hour to allow most pixels to vary in color and brightness.
  • This image shifting is possible through our use of HDV cameras which have higher resolution than a DVD can hold, so there are more pixels that extend beyond the screen. This allows us to slide the excess image slowly across the viewable screen, and keeps the pixels changing color and brightness. Gray Art may be the first to use this orbiting technique in a single-scene DVD video production. We want your plasma monitor to have a good life, which is why we embrace this best practice.

LCDs and modern CRTs have no issues with burn-in.

*While we have toiled to produce the ultimate product, you should consult your manual to ensure maximum life from your plasma television.

    Quality In, Quality Out.

The end product is only as good as its source, so we started with High Definition (HDV) cameras. HDV cameras double the horizontal and vertical resolutions of DV camcorders, translating to a total of 4 times as many recorded pixels than a typical consumer camera. The aspect ratio is widescreen (16:9) to best accommodate High Definition Televisions (HDTVs). Although a DVD cannot playback with HD resolution, our High Definition master recording ensures the best possible quality on your display. We will eventually offer BluRay and HD-DVD product when when it is viable to do so.
